The Different Moment… (Killing Fields Reflection)

A genocide……, but a different one, the one that caused by a nation killing its own kind for power. It is unprecedented until 17th April 1975 – the day of the eclipse.

Feeling & Expectation

Everything was hazy. When I first stepped into Choeung Ek (the Killing Fields), I felt differently. Every time I walked, I felt like there’s something that keeps pulling me down at my feet and in my soul. It’s heavy. And deep breathe had always been made by me. Thinking of Choeung Ek, the first thing that I can be visualized in my mind was the stupa (the Killing Fields Memorial) that contains all the bones and skulls, standing humbly with the spire pointing toward heaven. Nothing else. Not at all. Not even the gate. In fact, there are so much more interesting and creepy scenes that been waiting for me behind the stupa. Mass graves. Victim’s’ clothes. Killing tools. It was way different from what I thought it would be. Apparently, from the look of those kinds of stuff, they are just ordinary materials, but the stories behind them are unacceptable to all the Cambodian citizens. My whole body froze. I was numb. I couldn’t describe my own feeling at all when I actually heard those stories. What I can say was that I felt like someone was stabbing people whom I care and love with a knife – I can’t help, but seeing them die right in front of me. Very very, very painfully. I didn’t expect that I would ever felt this way. Picturing those scenes from the audio made me realized: how can they do that? Those actions are worst than animals. Cruel. I could never imagine myself being in those situations. Never.

Interesting Info

Somehow, I really impressed with the audio tour. It an awesome idea for people to gain clear information and they can actually picture what was happening in their head. Nevertheless, I had received so much more information about the Khmer Rouge regime from the audio tour. There are several main points that I absorbed:

  • Escorting victims to Choeung Ek
  • Execution equipments/techniques
  • DDT chemical

First of all, I wanted to say that the Khmer Rouges are all GENIUSES (but EVILS). In order, to transport people from S-21 and other places to the Killing Fields, soldiers had to lie to the victims that they will take them to a “new home; a better one”. Moreover, all of them were blindfolded and didn’t know where they were going. If the soldiers were to tell them the truth, there might be a chaos; people will fight back to get away. In addition, the killing types of equipment are generally the tools that we can easily find such as, ax, hoe, big knife, and rarely bullet since it’s expensive. They usually executing people at night with the loud music and the sound of the noisy generator to cover up the sorrow. In some other way, they would just let people excavate a pit to bury themselves. Another interesting point is about the D.D.T chemical, which is such a new information to me. After the execution, the soldiers used the D.D.T chemical to spray on the body in order to make sure all the people are dead and they won’t smell. Clearly, people who survived from the KR regime were usually had stolen food, since the main cause of death during that time was starvation.

Quotes

  • If you dig the grass; dig till the roots – បើជីកស្មៅ ត្រូវជីកទាំងឬស

Questions

  1. What made people became killers? Is it because of pressure? Or is it their own choice?
  2. What’s the reason(s) that made Pol Pot chose the wrong path? Or led him to the wrong way?
  3. Is there any country in the world know about the situation in our country during the KR regime?

Being a Cambodian

Khmer Rouge had destroyed our people hope at first and even though we conjure, we still have the hope of looking forward to the future. I have no regret in being born as Cambodian. Even though we have such a terrible past and we can not change it. I still believe that we can work it out the best for our future. As one of the promising child in creating positive change in our country, I promise to bring the hope back for our people and make us become one bunch of chopsticks again; not a single chopstick. We can easily break one single chopstick, but not a bunch of it though. We will keep fighting for the great future in front of us. I will always keep fighting for our future!

SAIMUN 2017

On March 17th and 18th 2017, I attended  SAIMUN in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, that hosted by Renaissance International School Saigon at the Sheraton Hotel & Tower. In that Model United Nation conference, I was the delegation of Sweden in the General Assembly 4 committee. “Reaching Global Consensus” was the theme of the whole conference. It was my first time to join the General Assembly committee and to be in the committee alone without any other Liger’s students. It was very challenging for me to work with other students to come up with a thoughtful resolution for the topic that my team and I focused on, which is the question of redefining the role of neighboring countries in refugee crisis. I was the youngest delegate in my committee and English is my second language, so it very difficult for me to collaborate and communicate my idea to the other students in the team. Thus, this experience had really built up the courage for me to face my fear of being shy and quiet, to actually be strong and brave in communicating my ideas.

Hackathon #SVtoPP

Maya Gilliss-Chapman, a founder of Cambodia in Tech, wants to build a bridge between Silicon Valley and Phnom Penh. So, she comes up with an idea of Hackathon event. Hackathon happened on the 26th and 27th November, it is not really an event but a competition. Basically, there are many groups that trying to develop their idea addressing a problem in the society. They have to have their solution mockup and a business plan. There are two groups that come from my school, one is a group that doing about the health problem and my group, which is about finding a market for farmers (ImEx). We used all of those two days to prepare and develop our idea. At the end, we have to pitch our idea/solution to the judges. The team that caught my attention the most is the Flexible Keyboard. Their idea is really cool, in term of helping Cambodian to type Khmer faster and in a correct word. Finally, after the pitch, there were three teams that won the award and that does not include my team. We didn’t surprise because the teams that we compete with are the students from University. We were proud of all of the effort and determination that we all had put into this competition. We had lots of good advice from judges that we can somehow develop on our application more. We had met lots of people that interest in our idea and want to help us develop it.

Green School/Camp Bali

Green Camp/School Bali located in the jungle lush and their primary focus is on environment “Learning adventures inspired by Nature.” This camp/school is running the program based on their surrounding environment which is nature. Their four pillars of learning are Sustainability, Leadership, Experiential Education, and Cultural Appreciation. The students and the people at the Green School/Camp Bali get involves lots with nature. It’s such a unique school and camp because all of the building structure is using bamboo. Bamboo is a durable material, and there is abandon of them in the jungle. I wish I could go there one day. The two people also divide us into groups, to do the activities with bamboo material that they bring with them. They told us to build any structure using that material that they give. My group idea was to build an Angkor Wat temple because the first things that people will think about Cambodia are the Largest Religious Temple in the world. We work with each other well to do our job. It was fun to do that activity and to hear about the Green School/Camp Bali. It such a beautiful place to go and experience with nature.

First Aid Lesson

One of my science teacher friends, Peter, came to teach us about First Aid. What does First Aid mean? For me, First Aid is the first thing/action that we can do to help people or ourselves when there is something happened so that it does not cause the problem to death. Peter had taught me many things about First Aid. These are the three most important things that I had learned:

  1. What to do if someone is choking
  2. Practice doing CPR with a bean bag
  3. What to do is someone, or you is bleeding

When you see someone is choking, you should follow the following steps:

  1. If you still can hear the person is coughing, please encourage that person to cough harder
  2. If that unsuccessful, get behind the person and give that person a five sharp blow between the shoulder blades using your palm
  3. If that two-step still not work, then still stay behind the person and do a five thrust up and down

What to do if you see someone is bleeding or you are bleeding?

  1. The first things that you should do are clean that suffering place with pressure water
  2. Then takes a nice and clean piece of cloth to wrap around that bleeding place

What to do if you see a person unconscious?

  1. You should try to wake that person up by shouting or pinching
  2. If that not work, try to call the emergency number and don’t leave that person alone
  3. Check to see if the person is still breathing or heart beating
  4. If the person is not breathing, you need to use your hands to push at the diaphragm muscle at the bottom of the rib cage
  5. If the individual is no purse, you need to start and do CPR
