Algebra Description

Name of Course: Algebra C

Learning Facilitator: Jeff

Number of Students: 12

Dates: Jan 19-March 27

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: Our group learned about Algebra. We started to learn one big keyword is PEMDAS. Then we started to study the definition of each letter. PEMDAS means: P stands for Parenthesis, E stands for Exponent, M stands for Multiply, D stands for Divide, A stands for Add and S stands for Subtraction. After this we learned about negative numbers and positive numbers. We learned how to multiply, divide, add and subtract negative numbers and positive numbers together. With that we had the equation to practice too. When we finished this we drew the number line to know about negative and positive numbers. Then we tried to solve the problems with parenthesis and exponents together. Next we worked on combining like terms and x,y tables. All the problems that we did the teacher can help a little bit and the less we must to do it by ourselves. The teacher helped us and taught us very well. In the class we worked like a team then we gave the work to the teacher to check.

Scratch Description

Name of Course: Scratch

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 13

Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 12-Oct 17

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment class we learned how to program in Scratch. Scratch is a program for making continuous animation, games, simulation, music and art. This program uses custom programming language. We learned each category of custom programming language: Motion, Control, Looks, Sensing, Sounds and Pen. Motion is moving custom program. Control is controlling custom program, for example when we click right arrow the avatar go to right. Looks is size, avatar, and communicating custom program. Sensing is sensor custom program, for example when we touch color black the avatar turn to black. Sounds is sounds custom program, for example when we press space avatar say hello. Pen is coloring custom program. We learned what the categories mean and we translated in Khmer to make more understand and remember. We played with the program to change the color to make it big. We thought what story we were going to make. Then we made the stories in Scratch. Also some of us made the games. When we had some of questions we asked teacher or our friends to help. We played with makey makey that connects to Scratch. One example of a game we made is when we touch the Earth material that connects to makey makey and the makey makey connects to computer. The computer plays the sounds.

Name of Course: Robotics 2

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 13

Advanced Enrichment Dates: Session 2: Oct. 20 – Jan. 16

Days we Meet: Thursday/Friday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment class we learned how to build a robot and programming. When we know how to build and program we did some challenges that teacher tell us to do so teacher can know the knowledge of us. We worked as a pair and one group have one computer for program. Robot we build it from a lego brick. We used touch sensor, light sensor, gyro sensor, and ultrasonic sensor to do the challenge. The challenge that teacher gave us to do have like to help a people from a dragon and follow the shape such as a square. When we do a challenge that teacher give us to do is our robot low battery so we need to charge and spend more time on it. Sometimes we need a teacher to help us on programming a robot because it’s a hard part to learn in robot class. When we did a challenge finish at the end of the class we have a sumo game for a robot.

  • Exploration 3/4

Exploration Name: Robotics

Exploration Dates: Exploration 3: November 20 – January 17 and Exploration 4: January 20 – March 7

Number of Students: 6

Description: In our Exploration class we learned about natural disasters and how to make the robot with the lego bricks. The lego brick is really complicated to do the robot because it is small. The lego box has four sensors: ultrasonic sensor, color sensor, touch sensor and gyro sensor. The ultrasonic sensor is used for measuring the length. The color sensor is used for measuring the reflection of color. The touch sensor is used for touching something that tells about the place. It will send the information to the brain. We learned about how to program, build and about natural disasters. Each of these are very important and it gave lots of advantages because we needed to use all of the skills to do it. Building is the most important, which gives most advantages too because building is the first step to make the robot. Programming is the most difficult part because we need to write the code to make the robot work. When we started to learn our group needed to think about the ideas to make a robot that can do the challenge and complete the four goals of the challenge. They are Mechanical Design, Strategy & Innovation, Robot Performance and Programming. The natural disaster was divided into three parts: Presentation, Innovation Solution means how creative was the solution that we did and Research. The challenge was we needed to make the robot knock down the building, tsunami, take the track and the ambulance to the end zone. The students needed to work ìn a team with six people to have success in the FIRST® LEGO® League in Singapore. We had to look and watch lots of videos to get more ideas. We also looked at the rules of the game in order to learn more about the challenge. Then we went to Singapore to do the challenge.

Future Careers Description

  • Exploration 5

Exploration Name: Future Careers

Exploration Dates: March 10th – May 2nd

Number of Students: 12

Essential Questions:

1. How will jobs that help Cambodia look different in the future?

2. What motivates people to choose the job they do?

Description: In Exploration round five we learned about Future Careers. We learned about how jobs will help Cambodia in the future. On the first day, we did personal profiles. We had to include our name, our strengths, our favorite things and our goal. We did that because we wanted everyone to know us when they came to our school. We also had a trip to SGFE (Sustainable Green Fuel Enterprise). It is the place where they make charcoal out of coconut shells. It really helps Cambodia because they take the waste pickers to work in there so that they have a good job and they can get money for their children to go to school. Also, they help the environment by recycling things. The next thing we did was the research project. We researched about the global problems. We got to choose our own topics. The topics were about Mekong River, chemicals in the food, poverty, nuclear energy, dengue fever and etc. Then, we went to job shadow. It means we are the shadow of the worker. We interviewed them about how they are working. Everyone got to go to two workplaces. The places that we went to are Northbridge International School, Plantation hotel, Small Word, Osja studio, A.N.D and more.
